How to run a trivia night that actually works
Mix the difficulty on purpose. The fastest way to lose a room is an opening question nobody gets. Every bank here starts easy and ends hard for exactly that reason — the early rounds buy you permission to be brutal later.
Six to eight questions per round. Longer than that and attention drains before the scores are read. Two or three short rounds beat one long one.
Decide how strict you are before you start. Half-right answers cause every argument in pub trivia. Say the rule out loud in round one and stick to it.
Play in teams if the room is mixed. Teams of three or four let a 60-year-old and a 20-year-old contribute to the same answer, which is the whole trick with themed rounds.
Let the scoring run itself. Keeping score on paper is the least fun job in the room and the one most likely to end in a dispute. Hosting the set live means the leaderboard updates itself and nobody has to trust the person with the pen.
